BREAKING: Police arrest NURTW president, others, seal secretariat in Abuja

The Nigerian police have arrested the president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW ), Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa.

Operatives of the force on Saturday, August 12, also sealed off NURTW’s national secretariat at Garki 2, Abuja.

Apart from Baruwa, the police nabbed the union’s General Secretary, Anthony Asogwa Chukudi; Olayi Odion; and National Trustee, Principal Assistant Secretary, Abdulrasak Yemi. The officers are currently being detained at the Wuse Zone 3 Division.

Confirming the arrests to journalists on Saturday, Mr Isa Ore, the union’s deputy president, said it was a shock to see security agents locking their offices without explaining why.

Ore said: “Today, Saturday, we were preparing for the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected National Administrative Council members, but we just saw police, and they asked us to leave the premises.

”They said it was an order from above, and they have detained our president and other leaders at Wuse police station.”

At the moment, the police in the Federal Capital Territory are yet to release an official statement on the development, while efforts to reach the spokesperson Josephine Adeh were unsuccessful.
