APC stakeholders reject alleged defection plan of Plateau governor

A group known as Plateau State APC Vanguard has urged President Bola Tinubu and the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reject any attempt by Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau, to defect to the party.

The appeal was made on Monday during a press briefing in Jos, the state capital.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Maikor Markus Galadima, its spokesperson, said the alleged move by the governor to join the APC would weaken the party’s rising influence in Plateau ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said the APC in the state is enjoying a resurgence, attracting political heavyweights and supporters across the board.

Galadima said: “New political heavyweights are joining in large numbers, including the former director-general of Governor Mutfwang’s own campaign organisation, along with thousands of his supporters.

“This groundswell of support is a testament to the renewed confidence in our party’s vision, integrity, and the exemplary leadership of our current state leaders, who are working tirelessly to return Plateau to the path of peace, progress, and prosperity.”

He asked the governor to remain in his current party and be held accountable for his performance in office.

“Governor Mutfwang should remain in his party to give an account of his stewardship,” he said.

“The APC remains a home for visionary leadership, developmental politics, and inclusive governance—values that Barrister Caleb Mutfwang clearly does not represent,” he said.

Reacting to the development, Amande Jonathan, publicity secretary of the APC in Plateau, said the governor has no intention of defecting and dismissed the rumours as “political gimmicks”.

“I can assure you that Governor Mutfwang is not defecting to any political party; it is all political gimmicks and the wishes of the APC,” he said.

Jonathan said both the state and national leadership of the APC are the ones attempting to woo the governor due to his track record in office.
