2023: Northern elder points out key rule aspirants are flouting

Spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, on Tuesday said aspirants for various political office in respect of 2023, are flouting the rule about campaigning before statutory timelines.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Baba-Ahmed expressed concern with the fact that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is not paying attention to the issue.

“Politicians (and their surrogates) aspiring to lead us into a nation founded on rule of law are busy flouting the rules about campaigning before statutory timelines. Some are public office holders. Shouldn’t we worry over our future in their hands? Where is INEC?” Baba-Ahmed wrote on his known Twitter handle.

Since some top politicians eyeing the No.1 seat in Nigeria announced their intention to contest in the 2023 general elections, they have not stopped consulting. Many supporters of persons like the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Bola Tinubu, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Dele Momodu have been deploying the digital space to subtly campaign for their choice.

There is also the proliferation of billboards and campaign posters of some political parties and aspirants across the country — an act INEC has always frowned at.

The law provides that campaigns in public shall commence 90 days before the polling day and end 24 hours before the election.
