Senator Ned Nwoko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparation and Repatriation, has urged the Senate to investigate the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He made the demand in a correspondence where he also declared his defection from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The letter was read on the Senate floor by President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, during Wednesday’s plenary session.
In his letter, Nwoko cited the persistent crises plaguing the PDP as the reason for his decision. He expressed concern that the party’s instability poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s democracy, warning that if left unaddressed, the country risks sliding into a dangerous one-party system.
Nwoko described the PDP as a party that has been engulfed in persistent crises, ranging from internal divisions to a lack of clear leadership and direction. He noted that these crises have weakened the party’s ability to function as an effective opposition, which is essential for a healthy democracy.
The Senator urged the Senate to establish an Ad-Hoc Committee to investigate the internal crisis within the PDP.
“This committee should examine the root causes of the party’s internal implosion, engage relevant stakeholders, and propose reforms that will ensure the survival of a viable opposition in Nigeria,” Nwoko stated.
