The Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State has suspended its Caretaker Committee Chairman, Robinson Ewor, over alleged alignment with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The party said the action followed Ewor’s recent conduct and public statements, which it described as harmful to the stability and future of the PDP in the state.
Party leaders accused him of acting in ways that openly favoured Wike, who has been expelled from the party.
The decision was reached after an emergency meeting of the Rivers State Caretaker Committee held in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
The meeting reviewed Ewor’s recent political moves and his comments on the ongoing crisis in the state.
Ewor had earlier accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of misleading party leaders during the political tension that rocked Rivers State.
He claimed the governor created the impression that he was ready to confront Wike politically, only to step back when the crisis deepened.
He further alleged that party stakeholders were abandoned after being encouraged to believe that a political showdown was inevitable.
According to him, the situation worsened when Fubara defected to the All Progressives Congress in December 2025, leaving PDP members exposed.
Tension increased after Ewor was seen in the company of Wike during one of the former Rivers governor’s “thank you” visits across local government areas in the state.
The appearance sparked outrage within the party, with many leaders viewing it as an act of open defiance.
The PDP said Ewor’s actions were capable of weakening the party’s structure in the oil-rich state. It announced his suspension both as Caretaker Chairman and as a member of the party.
Following the decision, the Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Ogbam Ojimah, was named Acting Chairman. Ojimah addressed journalists shortly after the meeting, reaffirming the party’s loyalty to the national leadership under Dr Kabiru Turaki.
He stressed that Wike remains expelled from the PDP and has no authority to interfere in the affairs of the party in Rivers State. He added that the party had fully distanced itself from Ewor’s recent statements and activities.
Reading from the resolutions reached at the meeting, Ojimah said:
“The Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Rivers State Chapter, after our meeting here today, the 3rd of January, 2026, hereby resolved as follows: that we disassociate ourselves from the press statement and public utterances credited to Dr Nname Robinson Ewor, the former Chairman.
“That it is important to re-emphasise and remind the general public that Hon. Nyesom Wike has already been expelled from our party and therefore has no right to interfere in the affairs of the PDP.
“That Dr Nname Robinson Ewor, by his actions and speeches, has voluntarily resigned and relieved himself of the position of Caretaker Chairman of the PDP, Rivers State; and that the Caretaker Committee hereby formally suspends Dr Nname Robinson Ewor as Chairman and member of the Caretaker Committee of the PDP, Rivers State. Hence, nobody should deal with him in that capacity.
“That the Caretaker Committee of the PDP, Rivers State, hereby resolves and unanimously appoints the Secretary, Chief Ogbam Ojimah, as the Acting Chairman, and Dr Baribefu Fidunko as the Acting Secretary of the PDP, Rivers State.
“That we remain committed and focused on repositioning our party for competitive electioneering and service to the people under the leadership of Dr Kabiru Turaki, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party.”
However, party insiders say the move is part of wider efforts to stabilise the PDP in Rivers State amid deep internal divisions and shifting political loyalties.
