Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to embattled Governor Siminalayi Fubara have elected a new speaker, Ehie Edison, in a move seen as an attempt to frustrate ongoing impeachment proceedings against the governor.
Edison, who was earlier suspended as the leader of the House by anti-Fubara lawmakers, was elected the speaker during a sitting held at Government House on Monday.
The development comes amid heightened political tensions in the state, as lawmakers loyal to Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, trade accusations and counter-accusations.
