The Senate President Ahmed Lawan has announced Osun lawmaker, Ajibola Bashiru, as the new spokesperson of the upper chamber.
Mr Bashiru from the ruling party will succeed Godiya Akwashiki as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs. Senator Akwashiki was the acting spokesperson following the removal of Ekiti Senator, Adebayo Adeyeye who was sacked by a court in November 2019.
POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that a Court of Appeal, sitting in Kaduna replaced Mr Adeyeye with former minority leader, Senator Abiodun Olujimi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Although the ruling All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State immediately rejected the judgment, the opposition PDP applauded it as the restoration of the people’s mandate.
It should be noted that both senators contested Ekiti South Senatorial District seat in the February 23, 2019, National Assembly election.
According to the Senate President during Tuesday plenary, Mr Akwashiki from Nasarawa is now the chairman of the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity while Biodun Olujimi (PDP, Ekiti) is named the chairman Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations.
