Displeased with the worsening security situation in the country, Nigerian senators have threatened to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.
POLITICS NIGERIA learnt that at the commencement of plenary on Tuesday, the lawmakers questioned Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, on why the issue of insecurity was not in the Order Paper.
This newspaper learnt that the lawmakers were thoroughly displeased with the silence on terrorists’ threat to go after President Buhari; Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai; and top Nigerian politicians.
After intense pressure on him, Lawan succumbed, and agreed that the issue of insecurity be discussed publicly on Wednesday at plenary and not at a closed session.
“We shouted out to the President of the Senate that it must be discussed and when he refused, we threatened that we will begin impeachment move against President Buhari because the country is not safe,” a source told newsmen.
This is not the first time that lawmakers will threaten to remove President Buhari.
In June 2018, the National Assembly threatened to impeach the president if he did not accede to a list of demands it made.
In May 2021, Federal lawmakers bickered over threat by opposition legislators to impeach President Buhari.
This fresh threat by Senators comes amid worrisome terrorists attacks in Nigeria’s seat of power, Abuja, in the last one month.
Troops of the 7 Guards Battalion of the Nigerian Army Presidential Guards Brigade were ambushed on Friday night around the Bwari Area Council of Abuja by terrorists suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents.
The incident left three soldiers wounded and eight personnel killed.
The attack came few weeks after terrorists invaded the Kuje prison in Abuja and freed hundreds of inmates, including Boko Haram suspects.
One of the terrorists in a video threatened that his group would abduct President Buhari and some other governors and senators in the country.
President Buhari deserves impeachment before he hand over Nigeria to terrorists
Naivety seemed to have taken hold of the appropriate authorities on security or it could be a conspiratorial complicity on their part to collude with the Terrorists/Bandits/Insurgents threatening the seat of Power in Abuja!
Even the Threat of kidnapping Buhari and some State Governors may seem an unlikelihood until it probably happens!
The Train Terrorists are in control, and everyone is keeping quiet and acting as if it’s okay!
Anything else is possible!
So sad and depressing indeed.
Noise is never a statement but just plain noise: press the impeachment motion or button by way of actual motion advanced and tabled on the floor, and then watch how Buhari and his cabals will suddenly spring up to reality. It is like the proverbial monkey that was rattling and shaking leaves, stems and branches when atop a tree upon sighting a roaring lion at the base of the tree, but suddenly go numb or quiet when suddenly the winds swavelled the branches to the base, meaning of course that Buhari and his cronies at the top decision making hierarchy will never bullge a bit until real impeachment motions not a threat of impeachment motion is served on them.
