An emir in Sokoto State, Alhaji Isa Bawa, the Sarkin Gobir, has been murdered by bandits after being kidnapped and subjected to torture.

In reaction, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the government of Sokoto State.

The BBC Hausa reported the death on Wednesday.

Reacting via a statement, Atiku described the Emir’s killing as “tragic” and denounced the bandits’ “senseless acts of violence.”

He said: “Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.

“I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the entire community of Gobir and the government of Sokoto State on the tragic loss of Sarkin Gobir, HRH Alh. Isa Bawa, District Head of Gatawa District in Sabon Birni local Government.

“The heinous act of violence perpetrated by bandits resulting in the untimely demise of such a revered leader is a stark reminder of the pressing need for enhanced security measures in safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.

“The failure of government to show concern or devise effective security strategies has undoubtedly contributed to the escalation of such distressing events in recent times.

“It is important to reiterate that government must provide security that will ensure the protection of lives, such that individuals do not have to live in fear of falling victims to senseless acts of violence.

“May the Almighty Allah accept the soul of Alhaji Isa Bawa and  grant his bereaved family and people the fortitude to bear his loss. Amin.”

Recall that the Emir and his son were kidnapped by terrorists in July while travelling from Sokoto to his hometown, Sabon Birni.

Recently, a video released by the bandits showed the monarch pleading for help, his clothes soaked in blood, as he begged for rescue.

The monarch had said the time set by the bandits for his release or execution elapsed Wednesday last week.
