Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate and activist, has called for the abolition of several key government agencies, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), and the National Economic and Labor Fund (NELFUND).
Sowore described the institutions as “extracurricular bureaucratic busybodies,” adding that they serve no meaningful purpose and waste public resources.
Sowore’s comments came in the wake of a recent admission by JAMB regarding significant technical failures during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which led to the disruption of exams for thousands of students.
The controversial incident has sparked outrage and frustration, especially as it affected the performance of many candidates who had their results unfairly impacted.
During a press briefing in Abuja, JAMB’s Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, publicly admitted to the errors that marred the examination.
Oloyede expressed regret over the failures, acknowledging that what should have been a joyous occasion for students aspiring to enter higher education was marred by technical difficulties.
“What should have been a moment of joy has changed due to one or two errors,” Oloyede said, referencing the technical glitches that disrupted the examination process at 157 centres across six states.
The states included Lagos, Anambra, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Enugu, affecting over 379,000 candidates out of the 1.9 million registered for the exam.
The failures resulted in widespread discontent among students, parents, and educational stakeholders.
Sowore blasted the agency for its failure to ensure the smooth conduct of such an important national examination, calling it another example of bureaucratic inefficiency that has led to frustration for millions of Nigerians.
He also criticized other similar government agencies, including the NYSC, TETFUND, and NELFUND, which he believes contribute little to the country’s development and are prone to inefficiencies.
