President Bola Tinubu has agreed to reinstate Siminalayi Fubara as Governor of Rivers State, but under the condition that Fubara must not seek re-election in 2027.
The decision followed a closed-door meeting held on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
In attendance were FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara, suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and several lawmakers.
It is understood that the agreement is part of a broader peace deal aimed at restoring political stability and democratic order in Rivers State.
Under the terms of the truce, Fubara will serve out his current four-year term but is barred from contesting for a second term.
“The arrangement is clear: no second term, no local government control, and peace will return,” a presidency source familiar with the negotiations said.
The deal also grants Wike political leverage. According to sources, the FCT Minister will nominate all local government chairpersons across the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State. This move is expected to restore grassroots control to Wike’s camp.
“The president made it clear that Rivers cannot afford a prolonged crisis. The deal is about restoring calm, but it comes at a steep cost for Fubara,” another source explained.
In addition, Fubara has agreed to pay all outstanding allowances and entitlements owed to the 27 lawmakers loyal to Wike, who were earlier suspended by the state assembly. In exchange, the lawmakers will refrain from pursuing any impeachment proceedings against him.
“Wike is the real winner here. By controlling the local government chairmen, he retains significant influence over the state’s political machinery, which will be crucial for 2027,” a source added.
Wike wants to be the Tinubu of Rivers
This is a liar from the pit of hell. This news didn’t reflect the outcome of the peace to be restored in rivers state. Stop painting Bar. Wike and the president as dictators
This is real rubbish. Corruption and high handedness in full play. I cry for the good people of Rivers state
If this is true, is not democracy
Politics in Rivers state is a game of hell. I only pity the people of rivers state who will remain as slaves and beggars for what rightly belong to them.
Is this democracy or imposition? After power what next to man?
This can never be true but if it is Fubara will be the highest idiot to agree to such agreement. And not even a dead man will agree to it
Someone should tell me between uniform era and this rigallia era which one we are going to call dictator, because I don’t understand why an opposition party will be receiving an order from rulling party
This is a terrible truce. Arm twisting Fubara.
Democracy… Fela you are right.
First of all, u guys should understand that fubara didn’t bring it self to the power but someone did and which is wike. In that case he hv to obey the order frm his superior.
Chai, who do Nigeria dis kind thing. These ruling class live their lives as if they are immortal, oblivion of the fact that a day will come when they will leave this life with nothing, irrespective of all the wealth and power they have acquired. They act as If Nigeria belongs to them and the citizens or lower class are just mere tenants occupying the little spaces allocated them. God is watching.
Nonsense agreement
Why are we sleeping and some brigands are lording it over us and we just keep quiet. Who has the power to tell who not to seek a second term? How dare them? Only the people of Rivers State can say who should seek reelection or not and it’s only with th3ir votes.
Since when did the Executive Branch of Government become the Judiciary? For what offence is he being barred from seeking reelection?
He makes everything beautiful in His time. Thank God at least peace will be in Rivers State.
