Two soldiers are currently on the run after being identified as part of a now foil coup plot to overthrow the Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
POLITICS NIGERIA earlier reported that about 16 officers have been detained by the Military but recent findings indicate that 18 soldiers were targeted for arrests.
Reliable sources confirmed that two soldiers, Major J.M. Ganaks and Captain G. Binuga are currently on the run for their roles in the failed plot.
Profiles of the Fleeing Officers
Major J.M. Ganaks, with service number N/14363, hails from the Federal Capital Territory. He is a member of the 58 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and was stationed at Jaji, Kaduna State, before his disappearance.
Captain G. Binuga, identified by service number N/167722, is from Taraba State. He was serving with the Defence Headquarters Special Operations Forces (DHQ SOF) in Bida, Niger State, and is a member of the 64 Regular Course of the NDA.
Both officers were among those marked for questioning by military investigators after the arrest of 16 other personnel in early October. However, the duo fled shortly before security agents could apprehend them.
A senior military source disclosed that both men have fled Nigeria.
Over 30 Officers Now in Custody
Investigators have intensified the clampdown and several arrests have been made following confessions from the officers in Custody.
At least 30 military personnel across different commands have been detained as security agencies expand their search for possible financiers and collaborators.
It was gathered that arrests began in the first week of October, indicating that the alleged operation was still in its preparatory stages before being uncovered.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has yet to officially confirm the alleged coup plot. However, its Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said in an earlier statement that the ongoing internal investigations were part of the military’s routine disciplinary process.
“The current investigation involving some officers is a routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism within the ranks,” he said.
