Some unknown gunmen, numbering over 20, on Monday morning set ablaze a section of Ezza North Local Government Area (LGA) headquarters in Ebonyi State.
POLITICS NIGERIA learned that valuable items and documents worth millions were destroyed during the criminal act.
The Chairman of the local government, Ogodo Ali Nomeh confirmed the incident to the press.
He said the arsonists stormed the area around 1 am and proceeded to set ablaze the store of the local government.
The LG boss explained that the arsonists were however resisted by police personnel who succeeded in inflicting bullet wounds on some of them before they fled.
“The fire destroyed new air conditioners bought for the renovation of the council, some documents, and a generating set and some furniture,” Nomeh said.
For many years, south-east Nigeria was considered the safest geopolitical zone in the country. The five states — Ebonyi, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, and Imo — that form the zone had recorded the least spate of violent attacks in comparison with other parts of the country. But that is not the case again.
In August, some gunmen attacked police officers on stop-and-search duty along Enugu expressway, G-hostel axis in Ebonyi.
On June 28, gunmen also killed an unconfirmed number of persons in Ohaukwu LGA, also in Ebonyi.
