BREAKING: Supreme Court insists on hearing new Naira Suit

The Nigerian Supreme Court has maintained that the New Naira Suit must be heard today and a decision taken.

During the hearing, Moyosore Onigbanjo, counsel for Lagos State, requested that the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, be prohibited from defending the respondents due to his contempt of initial court orders. Onigbanjo argued that the issue of contempt takes precedence over the issue of jurisdiction.

In response, Justice John Okoro stated that the judiciary cannot be made a scapegoat and that the matter would be heard and resolved today, regardless of whether the respondents obey the court’s orders or not.

Okoro, said; “you are not a stranger to this country. We don’t want a situation where the judiciary will be a scapegoat. We refuse to be the scapegoat”.

After a brief break, the court reconvened and continued the proceedings.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court restrained the Federal Government from enforcing the February 10 deadline for the replacement of old naira notes with new ones. However, the Central Bank of Nigeria refused to extend the deadline.

The injunction was the result of a lawsuit filed by the state governments of Zamfara, Kogi, and Kaduna against the Attorney General of the Federation on February 3. Several other states, including Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, Kano, Sokoto, Ogun, and Cross River, have also joined the lawsuit as co-plaintiffs.
