INEC, IGP, Ozigbo calls people to vote ‘en masse’ on Saturday

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Inspector-General of Police Usman Baba and Peoples Democratic Party’s gubernatorial candidate Valentine Ozigbo have all urged the state’s 2,525,471 eligible voters to vote on Saturday.

They made the call yesterday at the INEC chairman’s meeting with political parties at the Awka Election Stakeholders’ Meeting.

Senator Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress, Prof Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, and Dr Obiora Okonkwo of the Zenith Labour Party were among the candidates who attended the meeting.

Prof Yakubu said the state had added 1,112 Polling Units (PUs), bringing the total to 5,720 PUs.

He also reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to levelling the playing field for all political parties and holding free and fair elections.

Meanwhile, the IGP said the police would do their part to guarantee a free and fair. He added that the police and other security personnel worked together to provide appropriate security before, during, and after the poll.

Following the meeting, Mr Ozigbo spoke to the crowd on the sidelines, urging them to vote and not let fear of violence prevent them from doing so. He also dismissed the rumours that the election was pre-designed to be rigged.

“With the introduction of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), as well as the electronic transmission of results by INEC, rigging will not be possible,” Mr Ozigbo said.
