A group of youths stormed a police post in Olayiwola Close in the Oregun area of Ikeja, Lagos State, early this morning in a purported display of anger.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the assailants proceeded to set the police post ablaze, resulting in injuries to a police officer on duty.
At present, the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
However, reports suggest that the injured officer, who sustained a head injury, was promptly rushed to an emergency centre at the toll gate along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for immediate medical attention.
Efforts were made to contain the situation as officials from the Lagos State Fire Service were promptly contacted and mobilised to the scene. The fire was eventually extinguished, but the police post building sustained some damage.
Fortunately, no weapons were reported stolen during the incident.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the attack and stated that an investigation had been launched into the incident.
He added, “No suspect has been arrested” at this time.
In a related incident, two suspected members of the Yoruba Nation were apprehended during an attempt to take over the Alausa Police Station in Ikeja on Sunday.
The agitators, numbering around 15, entered the premises and began recording themselves while chanting slogans such as “No more Nigeria police again” and “Yoruba Nation has taken over in Yoruba land.”
As the situation escalated, some policemen stationed at the facility were attacked. In response, police reinforcements swiftly arrived at the scene and managed to arrest two agitators while others escaped.
The arrested individuals were found in possession of charms, cutlasses, and insignia associated with their group.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin emphasised that the police would continue investigating both incidents, aiming to bring the perpetrators to justice.
