Kidnapping in Nigeria: ‘Suspension of telecom services not working’ – Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani, a prominent Nigerian politician who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, has said the suspension of telecom services in September by authorities “has not stopped the cruelty of kidnappings”.

Sani stated this in a Twitter update on his verified handle on Monday.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member was reacting to an alleged abduction which he said happened on Sunday at Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna state. POLITICS NIGERIA cannot independently verify Sani’s abduction claim though.

“Yesterday, terrorists invaded the ECWA Church at Buda village, Kajuru Lg Kaduna state and abducted Pastor Dauda Isa and other worshipers. Their whereabouts remain unknown. Suspension of telecom services has not stopped the cruelty of kidnappings,” he wrote.

Kidnapping is presently a major problem in Nigeria. Perpetrated by bandits and insurgents, kidnapping is among the biggest organised or gang crime in the country, and is a national security challenge.

Nigeria has one of the world’s highest rates of kidnap-for-ransom cases. Other countries high up on the list included Venezuela, Mexico, Yemen, Syria, the Philippines, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia.
