President Muhammadu Buhari voiced his concern that peace might have become an elusive topic in Africa, hampering progress in many countries on the continent.
According to him, women and children are the ones who have suffered the most as a result of the breakdown of peace caused by insurgents and bandits, which has resulted in more widespread displacement and poverty.
President Buhari said during a speech at the State House Conference Centre’s ninth General Assembly of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM).
The president, who was a special guest, endorsed the AFLPM’s resolutions promoting peace and development on the continent.
He also encouraged African leaders and other stakeholders to help women develop a peaceful society.
“The importance of this assembly lies in the fact that peace has become an elusive subject that affects development in many regions of Africa.
“The activities of insurgents and banditry have led to more widespread displacement and poverty. It is not in doubt that women and children are the worst affected by the breakdown of peace. Therefore, as mothers, I believe, you are in better position to drive the processes of peace and actions where necessary,” he said.
On November 17, 2021, the House of Representatives enacted a bill establishing the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) to offer community policing, peace and order, and community service to Nigerians, as well as defend national assets.
President Muhammadu Buhari has been challenged to agree to the bill legalising VGN.
Yesterday in Abuja, VGN Commander General Umar Bakori said that if agreed, insecurity will dramatically decrease.
