The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria has said the government’s lack of enforcement of building laws has led to the alarming rate of building collapses in the country.
Chairman of the body, Dr. Samson Opaluwah made this known in response to recent tragedies in Kubwa, Abuja, and Jos, where a school building collapse claimed 22 lives and injured 132 others.
Dr. Opaluwah stressed the need for severe punishment for those responsible to prevent future disasters.
“These avoidable tragedies persist in urban centers where professionalism should be paramount. The government’s failure to enforce its laws is the main challenge. We must hold accountable those who have been negligent,” he said.
The development comes after four people were rescued from a collapsed two-story residential building in Kubwa, Abuja, on Saturday.
It should be noted that Nigeria has witnessed at least 135 building collapse incidents and 26 deaths between 2022 and 2024.
