Chief David Edebiri: Top Benin Chief Dies At 93

Chief David Edebiri, the Esogban of Benin, has passed on at the age of 93.

Esogban died on Thursday, July 20, at a private hospital in Benin after a brief illness.

However, a family source said the chief died at 12:20 pm on Wednesday, July 19.

The relative said: “Chief has not been too strong, and we took him to the hospital a few days ago, and he died this afternoon.”

He said the family will follow the protocols for the formal announcement to be made.

The Esogban, next after Benin’s Iyase (Prime Minister), is often called the Odiownere of Benin Kingdom.

Known to have worked as a journalist with Daily Times and a writer, the deceased unveiled two books in 2022 titled “Tripod of Life: Essence of Benin Tradition and Culture” and “The Life and Times of Iyase N’Ohenmwen”.
