Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi has approved the disbursement of N254 million to indigent widows and elderly persons in the state for Christmas celebrations.
The governor made this known through Patricia Obila, his deputy, at the elders and widows Christmas party organised by the Ebonyi state government.
Nwifuru said 5,008 widows and elderly persons would receive N50,000 each as a cash gift for the festive period.
He said the celebration of indigent widows and the elderly had become an annual tradition to appreciate their contributions to the workforce and development of the state.
The governor described them as special citizens whose prayers, he said, had sustained and strengthened the current administration.
Nwifuru urged the beneficiaries to continue believing in his government, assuring them that they would not be disappointed.
Speaking at the event, Uchenna Igwe, commissioner for local government, said the celebration demonstrated the administration’s commitment to caring for the downtrodden.
Igwe advised the widows and elderly to continue praying for peace and prosperity in the state.
Sam Nwokolo, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Ebonyi, commended Nwifuru for showing kindness during the festive season.
Nwokolo said the governor’s action reflected the teachings of Jesus Christ on compassion and service to humanity.
