Former militant leader Asari Dokubo has said that he and his boys have the manpower to defeat the military junta in Niger Republic.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Dokubo, in a viral video, said he and his men could overrun Niger Republic if commissioned by the Federal government. He also said that they could restore democracy in the country.
“If the government commissions me and my people to go to Niger Republic, we will go. We will defeat them and we will come back victorious,” Dokubo said. “It is not a boast.”
Dokubo’s comments come as negotiations and reconciliation efforts are ongoing between the Niger junta and West African leaders. The junta seized power in a coup d’état on 26 July 2023, detaining President Mohamed Bazoum in its wake.
The African Union has condemned the coup in Niger Republic and called for the restoration of democracy. The United States has also condemned the coup and imposed sanctions on the junta.
Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed, who shares ties with Dokubo, is the chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States. The president has vowed to engage the military in restoring democracy in Niger if other interventions fail.
The president should order the security agencies in the country to keep a tab on Asari Dokubo and his group of terrorists. If not, the government will wake up one day to see a surprise from Dokubo and his group.
