Comrade Julius Abure, factional national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has congratulated Joash Amupitan on his appointment as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), while urging him to obey court orders.
In a letter addressed to Amupitan and dated October 24, Abure described his appointment by President Bola Tinubu as “well deserved,” citing his distinguished record as a legal scholar, administrator, and “deeply religious person.”
The LP factional chairman said many Nigerians followed Amupitan’s screening at the Senate and were impressed by his intellectual grasp of the challenges confronting Nigeria’s electoral system.
His words: “I must say that you came prepared to face the challenges and to help secure our fragile democracy.
“Nigeria craves for an umpire who is apolitical and whose past has testimonies of love for the nation.”
Abure praised Tinubu for his “choice and faith” in Amupitan, saying the appointment reflected merit and competence.
He also commended the immediate past acting chairman of INEC for taking steps to correct what he described as “many wrongs” of the past leadership of the commission and for addressing infractions against the Labour Party.
Abure, however, urged the new INEC chairman to ensure full compliance with existing court orders recognising his leadership of the Labour Party.
He stated: “We are appealing to you to fully comply with several orders and judgements of the courts by directing the inclusion of the Labour Party in the upcoming FCT council election by uploading the names of the party candidates.
“As a worker in the temple of justice and one known to have always respected the rule of law, we urge you to revisit this abnormality and restore recognition to the current leadership of the Labour Party.”
Abure expressed optimism that Amupitan’s tenure would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, wishing him success in his new role.
