Musa Ibrahim, the director of the Road Transport and Mass Transit Administration, has urged Nigerians to embrace the use of bicycles to curb road accidents.
Making this suggestion to citizens during a stakeholders’ sensitisation meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, July 27, Ibrahim said it is also to push the need for cycling in Nigeria.
He noted that the meeting is in accordance with World Bicycle Day, marked annually on June 3 through a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution.
Ibrahim noted that World Bicycle Day recognises “The uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport, fostering environmental stewardship and health” hence the United Nations 2023 World Bicycle Day theme: ‘Riding Together for a Sustainable Future’.
He further argued that proponents have equally encouraged the use of bicycles to eradicate poverty, further sustainable development, strengthen education, including physical education, for children and young people, promote health, prevent disease, and facilitate social inclusion.
