Court grants bail to man arrested by Abba-Kyari-led IRT [PHOTO]

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Gudu District Abuja, on Thursday delivered judgement in a fundamental rights suit filed by Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor on behalf of Jude Chuks Obasi, POLITICS NIGERIA reports.

In the Judge’s verdict, the court ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on one side, and its Intelligence Response Team (IRT), hitherto led by the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, to immediately and unconditionally release Obasi, who has been kept in solitary confinement since his controversial arrest at the wee hours of the night from his residence at Nnewi, Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria, on the 31st of March, 2021. Since last year, he has been detained allegedly without access to his lawyers, relatives and family members.

The court further instructed the IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, and its IRT to immediately tender an unreserved apology in two national dailies to Obasi. It consequently awarded the sum of N5,000,000 (Five million naira) as reparation “for the gross violation of the fundamental rights” of Obasi.
