A Magistrate Court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has directed that a DNA test be carried out on Liam Aloba, the son of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
The order was issued on Tuesday by presiding magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga after hearing an application filed by the singer’s father, Joseph Aloba. He had approached the court seeking clarity on the child’s paternity.
According to the ruling, the DNA analysis is to be conducted in a certified and reputable medical institution, either within Nigeria or abroad.
Court filings show the application was made under Order 8 Rules 1 and 8 of the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) 2012, and Order 9 Rules 8 and 9 of the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009. The late Mohbad’s wife, Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, was listed as the respondent.
The court also authorised the Chief Medical Officer or Pathologist at the Military Hospital, Yaba—where Mohbad’s remains are preserved—to release tissue, hair, or other necessary samples for the examination.
In his submission, counsel to Joseph Aloba, Augustine Adegbemi of Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN) & Co, argued that “clarity on paternity is essential given its implications for the child’s welfare and the mother’s maintenance obligations.”
Mohbad’s widow, represented by her lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, did not oppose the application, paving the way for the court to grant the order without objection.
The magistrate outlined specific directives for the test: “That two (2) DNA tests be conducted in an accredited and recognised hospital, both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria. That both parties or their representatives be present when the sample is taken.”
The matter was adjourned until November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.
