The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta has struck out a suit filed by 16 political parties seeking to postpone the local government elections scheduled for November 16.
The parties had claimed that the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) acted unilaterally in fixing the election date without consulting them.
However, Justice T.A. Okunsokan ruled that there is no constitutional or electoral law provision requiring OGSIEC to consult political parties before setting election dates.
The court also dismissed the parties’ argument that the Ondo State governorship elections, happening on the same day, justified postponing the Ogun State LG elections.
