Court stops EFCC from arresting Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima, others

A Kano High Court sitting at Audu Bako Secretariat has granted an order restraining the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from arresting, detaining, harassing, intimidating or inviting Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The presiding judge, Justice Yusuf Ubale Mohammed, also restrained the commission from inviting and arresting another pro–Kwankwaso chieftain, Buba Galadima and five other party leaders.

Others are; Dr Ajuji Ahmed, Dipo Olayanku, Ahmed Balewa, Chief Clement Anele and Lady Folshade Aliu.

The judge barred the commission either by itself, its agents, its representatives, cronies or whatsoever acting on its behalf from arresting, detaining, harassing, intimidating, inviting or in any way infringing on the fundamental human rights of the applicants pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The order was granted following an ex- parte motion dated and filed on June 5th, 2024 by the applicants through their counsels, Robert Hon Esq. and Y. Y Dan Suleiman Esq.

The motion reads: “An interim order of injunction is hereby granted, restraining the respondent, either by itself, it’s agents, representatives, cronies, or whosoever acting on It’s behalf, from arresting, detaining, harassing, intimidating, inviting, or in any way infringing on the fundamental rights of the applicants, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice already filed.

“It further ordered that both the interim order granted, the motion on notice and all other processes in this suit shall be served on the respondent timeously and before the adjourned date,” the judge held.

The case is adjourned to June 24, 2024 for hearing of the motion on notice.

Recall that the EFCC had commenced investigation into the management of N2.5 billion election campaign fund managed by the National Working Committee of the party led by Kwankwaso.
