The Lagos State government has suspended the announced closure of Marine Bridge until further notice.
According to an earlier statement on Friday, the state Ministry of Transportation said the bridge would be closed for repairs from Saturday, March 28, 2020, to Saturday, August 15, 2020.
The statement added that the repairs will take a duration of 20 weeks and will be done in two phases to ease traffic movements.
It noted that the first half of the construction works will last for the first 10 weeks, while the second half would commence equally and last for 10 weeks.
However, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, the suspension of the closure is hinged on the need to comply with the social distancing directive, especially in the construction sector, to further curb the spread of the coronavirus.
Oladeinde said a new date for the planned repair works on the bridge will be communicated in due course.
The statement reads: “The Lagos State Government has suspended the announced closure of Marine Bridge until further notice.
“The decision on the Coronavirus pandemic and the need to comply with the social distancing directive, especially in the construction sector, to further curb the spread of the virus.
“A new date for the planned repair works on the bridge will be communicated in due course.”
