COVID-19 Lockdown: “Re-opening Nigeria is a big risk” – Kingsley Moghalu

Former Presidential Candidate, Kingsley Moghalu has reacted to calls for the Nigerian government to relax the lockdown currently in place to curtail the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Moghalu made these comments via a series of tweets on his social media page. He added that the Nigerian government could pay every poor Nigerian N20,000 each if it was ‘serious’.

“COVID: The conflict between staying at home and “Re-opening” is a difficult but ultimately false choice. Re-opening now is a big risk. As I said to my son if we were in a conventional war and bombs were dropping, would you pretend all is normal? Or is it because this is a virus?”

“In developed countries like the US, which had a disappointing initial response to COVID but can nevertheless give its citizens money and unemployment benefits, the argument for extending the lockdown is clear in my mind. But in a populous country like Nigeria where poverty reigns”

“It becomes much more difficult because the state is weak and ineffective. So people would rather risk dying from from the virus than from hunger. But this is because of failed governance, incompetence and corruption. @NigeriaGov CAN give every poor citizen 20K if it’s serious.”

“As I have said, I hope the COVID crisis has opened the eyes of Nigerians about our country’s politics and governance or has it? I am putting too much faith in the Nigerian people to know and act in their own best interest? I honestly don’t know. Only time will tell.” he wrote.
