COVID-19: Unvaccinated civil servants still spotted inside Abuja’s offices

Sources have reported that unvaccinated civil servants were still allowed into governmental offices in Abuja on Wednesday despite the Federal Government’s latest directive that bans those who have not been inoculated against COVID-19 from entering such places.

The Federal Government mandated that all civil servants must be vaccinated back in October, Federal Government secretary Boss Mustapha had also previously said that civil servants who failed to show proof of COVID-19 vaccinations would be barred from entering offices starting from December 1.

“With effect from 1st December 2021, Federal Government employees shall be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result done within 72 hours, to gain access to their offices, in all locations within Nigeria and our Missions,” Mustapha said earlier.

TheCable reported, however, that unvaccinated civil servants at the federal secretariat were only denied entry by the security officers for their first attempts of entering their offices. They were granted entry on their next try.

“Everyone was allowed into their offices even those not wearing facemasks,” a civil servant said, as quoted by TheCable.

Another civil servant working in the Ministry of Education complained about the tight vaccination deadline and said the government should extend it.

“Yes, it is true that we must vaccinate because of the combative nature of the virus,” Mrs Eunice Okafor said, as quoted by Leadership. “At the same time, they should give us time because of the number of people involved, so they should extend the deadline.”
