Current system of government not suitable for Nigeria – Ex-guber candidate

Tonye Cole, the 2023 governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, has said that the current system of government practised in Nigeria is not suitable for the country.

Cole, while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, said the presidential system practised in Nigeria does not appear to be working for all.

Stating that Nigeria is due to consider a change of governance system, Cole said it is important for nations to adopt what works for the people.

He argued that the current presidential system being practised is being exploited by a few people at the detriment of others’ benefit or social justice.

He also said that because Nigeria has not successfully established institutions that can hold public office holders to account, the system will continue to work for only a select few.

His words, “This American system that we call the Presidential system in Nigeria, we need to go and readdress it. We cannot import the parliamentary system of the UK, and it will not work here; we cannot import a presidential system, and it will not work here.

“Every African in their country are satisfied with the political system and democracy they have, but they will tell you no. Why? Because it is contrary to who we are, absolutely contrary,” Cole stated.
