Customs personnel flee as gunmen attack checkpoint in Abia, burn operational vehicle

Unknown gunmen on Thursday night attacked a Customs checkpoint on the Isiala Ngwa South Local Government axis of the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway of Abia State.

The Nation reports that the incident happened a few meters from a Naval outpost on Umuiika Junction at about 8 p.m.

According to the report, the gunmen burnt the operational patrol van of the Customs personnel and also shot and injured a passenger of an ash-coloured 18-seater commercial bus that ran into them.

Unconfirmed reports showed that some Customs personnel on duty sustained heavy gun injuries.

Another report had it that the Customs personnel escaped unharmed.

The injured passenger of the commercial bus was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital, where the victim was stabilized and treated.

Sources in the area said the Nigerian Army Ohafia 14 Brigade personnel, attached to 144 Battalion, Ukwa West Local Government Area of the state, mobilized its personnel from the Forward Operation Base to restore normalcy.

The incident left commuters from both ends of the expressway stranded Thursday night for more than 1hr 30minutes during the operation.
