Davido’s Hypeman Slams Grammys for Afrobeats “Control” After Snubbing Nigerian Nominees

Davido’s hypeman, Special Spesh, has slammed the Recording Academy, accusing the Grammy organizers of attempting to control African music after Nigerian artists, including his boss, were shut out at the 66th Grammy Awards.

Politics Nigeria reports that neither Davido nor any other Nigerian nominee managed to secure a Grammy on Sunday night, despite strong contenders in various categories. Instead, British singer-songwriter Tyla, the sole non-Nigerian nominee in the newly established Best African Music Performance category, walked away with the golden gramophone.

Spesh, saddened by the outcome, took to his Instagram platform to voice his frustrations. In a post, he said the Grammys are attempting to exert undue influence over African music, vowing that Africans will not tolerate any efforts to diminish Afrobeats or other African genres.

“We won’t give you the power to dumb Afrobeats down or Afrofusion or anything African!” he wrote. “That’s (white) America’s problem! When things start to take over and get massive they always want a part then try to have a say then try to control.”
