The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has downplayed fears that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, following recent waves of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In recent weeks, political analysts and concerned citizens have raised alarms over the sustained exodus of politicians from opposition parties to the APC, warning that the country’s democracy could be threatened if urgent steps are not taken.
But Prince Adebayo insists such fears are unfounded.
He said: “There’s no way Nigeria can become a one-party state. Because there is no unified system of welfare, employment, or security in the country.
“There’s a fundamental disconnect between the ruling political elite and the struggling masses.”
According to the SDP chieftain, the ideological and socioeconomic gap between Nigeria’s elite and the poor makes a one-party political system impossible.
“A politician hopping between parties cannot claim to be in the same coalition with a man who can’t pay his child’s school fees or afford three square meals.
“There’s no one system of security or employment. The benefits of politics flow in one direction — to the politicians.
“Meanwhile, the people remain unable to sleep peacefully at night or hold on to jobs that meet even one percent of their needs,” Adebayo said.
Drawing a sharp contrast between the ruling class and everyday Nigerians, he added: “How can someone waiting in the rain for a bus be in a one-party coalition with those flying around in multiple private jets funded by public money? That’s not a coalition. It’s exploitation.”
Adebayo further explained that a one-party state only becomes a reality when opposition parties are either banned outright or legally restricted.
His words: “If all the governors defect to one party, Nigerians will simply elect a new set of governors. If all the senators join one party, the people will vote for a different set. Defections do not make a one-party state.
“A one-party state exists when the system refuses to allow new parties or when it imposes the idea that only one party matters.”
He said the SDP remains focused on building a party of committed individuals who genuinely believe in the party’s values and vision.
“We are not about mass recruitment for numbers. We are about loyalty to ideals. That’s how real political parties are built,” Adebayo concluded.
