
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa has said that curbing insecurity in the country is possible with controlled border security.
General Musa while speaking at a conference in Abuja said it was time for Nigeria to fence all its existing borders.
The Chief of Defence Staff said national security can be improved through a security system that is effectively managed at at the border level.
He noted that various countries including Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have had the need to fence their borders with nations like Iraq and Afghanistan following the kind of insecurity experienced by these places.
“Other countries, because of the level of insecurity they have had to fence their borders.
“It is Nigeria that everybody is interested in. That is why we need to secure fully and take control of our borders. It is critical for our survival and sovereignty,” General Musa said.
He further stated that for Nigeria which shares borders with four countries including Niger, Chad, Cameroon and the Benin Republic more efforts need to be invested in border security.
General Musa added that adopting such an initiative would reduce the influx of insurgents into the country, thereby reducing the insecurity bedevilling Nigeria.
He also stated that such an approach would drastically reduce the growing border threats.
Since the emergence of Boko Haram terrorists, Nigeria has suffered several attacks by insurgents, especially in the states across the Northeast region.
These attacks by the terrorists have led to the destruction of homes, kidnapping of Nigerians – including women and children – and killing of victims of abductions.
Also, the activities of the insurgents have at several times attracted outrage from both local and international stakeholders.
The stakeholders have at different times called for support and the need to address the incessant attacks, kidnappings and killings by the criminals.
