Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has doubled down on his criticism of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, even as the former Anambra State governor moves to initiate legal action against him over alleged defamation.
Taking to social media on Thursday, Adeyanju wrote, “Peter Obi, the religious bigot and fraud must go to court or go to hell. He must not chicken out.”
Obi, through his lawyer, Alex Ejesieme (SAN), had earlier served a letter of demand on Adeyanju, accusing him of persistently publishing false and malicious statements on X, Facebook, and other platforms. The publications, according to Obi’s legal team, were designed to portray him as corrupt, fraudulent, and intolerant.
Among the statements cited in the letter were allegations that Obi diverted state funds into family businesses, attempted to offer bribes after a private meeting, and exploited religion to influence voters during the 2023 elections. Adeyanju was also accused of labelling Obi “the leader of a mob” and “a scum,” remarks which the lawyers said were calculated to damage his public image.
Obi’s legal representatives demanded that Adeyanju retract the posts, tender a public apology across his social media accounts, and publish apologies in three national newspapers. The letter warned that failure to comply within seven days would result in a lawsuit seeking aggravated damages, an injunction, and recovery of legal costs.
“The statements have been widely disseminated, causing untold damage to our client’s reputation and integrity,” the letter read in part.
