The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor, has emerged as a survivor of a devastating boat accident that claimed five lives, injured six, and left 20 passengers missing.
The incident occurred on Friday, November 22, 2024, along the Bennett Island River in Warri South-West Local Government Area.
Guwor, returning to Asaba after engaging with constituents in Warri, narrowly escaped harm when the boat he was travelling in nearly collided with another vessel. The tragedy, which unfolded in the afternoon, has left the speaker deeply shaken.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, Guwor expressed profound grief over the loss of lives.
“Mr Speaker is deeply saddened by the tragic mishap. His heart goes out to the families of the deceased, and he prays for God’s strength to help them bear these irreparable losses,” the statement read.
The speaker extended his gratitude to God for sparing his life and to the rescue and medical teams for their swift response.
He also called for a comprehensive investigation to uncover the accident’s cause and prevent future occurrences.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Guwor added, “I am still in shock and can only imagine the pain and grief of the victims’ families. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
The tragedy has prompted renewed calls for improved safety measures on waterways across Delta State.
