Details emerge as Benue Assembly slams 3-month suspension on Chief Whip, others

The Chief Whip of the Benue State House of Assembly, Alfred Berger has been suspended.

Berger, who serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, was suspended alongside three other lawmakers by the leadership of the Benue State House of Assembly.

It was gathered that the lawmakers were accused of attempting to cause disorder within the State Assembly.

Other suspended lawmakers are Shimawua Emmanuel (Vandeikya 2 Constituency), Cyril Ikong (Oju 2 Constituency), and Abu Umoru (Apa Constituency).

In a statement issued on Friday, the spokesperson for the Speaker, Terver Mzamber said the decision to suspend the lawmakers stemmed from a motion moved by the Majority leader, Saater Tiseer.

The motion was titled “Motion to Suspend Alfred Aondoaver Emberga and three others from legislative duties for attempting to cause chaos in the House.”

According to Tiseer, the suspended lawmakers were accused of mobilising members to impeach the Speaker barely three days after the House passed a vote of confidence in its leadership and the state governor.

However, reacting to this other lawmakers including Elias Audu (Gwer East Constituency) and Majority Chief Whip, Peter Bendigo Ipusu (Katsina-Ala West Constituency), condemned the actions and supported the suspension.

The suspension motion was upheld by the speaker of the House who handed a three-month suspension to the lawmakers.
