Details Emerge from Meeting Between Defence Chief, Security Heads on Niger Delta Oil Theft

Details have emerged from the meeting between the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, and top security officers to tackle oil theft and increase crude oil production.

The meeting, held at the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, followed a resolution by the service chiefs on Tuesday in Abuja to combat oil theft and boost production.

In attendance were the CDS, top General Officers Commanding divisions, Commissioners of Police, and heads of security agencies. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, and CEOs of NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, and NMDPRA, Farouk Ahmed, also attended.

The closed-door meeting lasted over five hours, focusing on implementing the service chiefs’ resolution to tighten security around oil facilities and combat oil theft. This aims to boost oil production, currently at 1.276 million barrels per day (bpd) in June, in the shortest possible time.

After the meeting, Lokpobiri and Kyari while speaking with the press assured Nigerians that oil production would increase within the deadline, with plans in place.

Gen. Musa reiterated the military’s commitment to following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to secure the Niger Delta, stop leakages, and improve oil production. Ahmed stressed the importance of tighter security for boosting production and dispelled rumours about hindering the Dangote Refinery’s operation.
