Details of Sanwo-Olu’s Meeting with Speakership Aspirant Abbass and 35 Members-elect Emerge

Details of a meeting between Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the speaker of the House of Representatives hopeful, Tajudeen Abbass, along with 35 members-elect have emerged.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the meeting, which was also attended by Benjamin Kalu and several other members-elect, saw Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasise the need for unity in Nigeria despite its diversity.

During the meeting, which took place on Saturday at the Lagos House Marina, Governor Sanwo-Olu called on the members-elect to work towards a well-diversified population in the House of Representatives and ensure that they do not take anybody for granted.

He also urged them to carry others along, as the people would not settle for anything less than the best from the leadership of the 10th Assembly.

He said: “Ensure that the leadership and the followership reflect the units of our country, reflect the true federal composition and political composition that we have in the country.”

While urging the lawmakers to ensure that their “engagement is total, is transparent and inclusive,” Sanwo-Olu added: “Ensure that everybody that needs to be carried along is carried along. All of the other aspirants are eminently also qualified to do so.”

Sanwo-Olu also urged the lawmakers to “ensure that your engagements further deepen
their engagements and ensure the leadership reflects the yearnings of the people.”

Speaking during the visit, Abbass, who represents Zaria Federal Constituency of Kaduna State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said the 10th Assembly is a unity project aimed at unifying Nigerians.

The meeting was attended by members-elect from the All Progressives Congress (APC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The All Progressives Congress (APC), the country’s ruling party, holds a majority of the members-elect in both chambers of the National Assembly, and it is expected to take charge of the next government. The party has recently nominated Tajudeen Abbass as Speaker and Benjamin Kalu as Deputy Speaker for the House of Representatives.

As preparations for the inauguration of the 10th Assembly continue, lawmakers-elect are scheduled to choose their presiding officers on June 13, 2023.
