Tinubu to Host Special ECOWAS Meeting on Niger Coup

President Bola Tinubu is expected to host a special meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja following the recent military coup in Niger.

The special adviser to Tinubu on special duties, communications and strategy, Dele Alake, made the announcement in a statement on Friday, July 28.

“Following the coup in the Republic of Niger that has upended the constitutional political leadership in the West African country, the Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bola Tinubu will host a special meeting of the regional leaders on Sunday, July 30th in Abuja,” Alake said.

Politics Nigeria earlier reported Amadou Abdramane, a colonel-major, announced the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum from office in a late-night address on Wednesday.

Abdramane dissolved the country’s constitution, suspended all institutions and closed the borders.

President Tinubu as Chairman of ECOWAS, in a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, condemned the current political situation in the neighbouring country and promised that ECOWAS and the international community would do everything to ensure that democratic governance continues to take firm root in the sub-region.
