Human rights lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, has given some plausible reasons for the dethronement of Muhammed Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano.
POLITICS NIGERIA reported how Governor Abdullahi Ganduje deposed Sanusi and replaced him with Aminu Ado Bayero on Monday.
This paper also chronicled events that happened before and after he was driven out of the Palace to Nasarawa state.
Mr Ozekhome, however, joined his voice with other legal practitioners’ who have condemned the deposition and termed it illegal.
His reaction was contained in a detailed statement sent to this paper on Tuesday.
According to him, Emir Sanusi has continuously preached modernity as against the archaic style of governance of the Northern elites who have continued their obnoxious policies of repression, retrogression, subjugation, oppression and marginalisation of the vast majority of their people.
“He has spoken vehemently against the Almajari system that turns children and the youths unto the streets in their thousands as able-bodied beggars. He has unrepentantly frowned at the girl-child marriage and labour.”
“He has, now and again, lampooned the Northern elites for inflicting untold hardship on the people of the North. He has courageously preached the dire necessity for education as a sure liberator of his people from the doldrums of ignorance and wretchedness.”
Mr Ozekhome explained that the action of the Kano state government has cost the Emir of his dignity as a Nigerian, hence, he should seek redress.
“The Emir is consequently entitled to the enforcement of his fundamental rights in this regard as provided for in section 34 of the Nigerian Constitution.”
“The Emir should immediately seek for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights. Enough of this government of impunity and lawlessness.”
“Suffering and impoverished Nigerians, who are always at the receiving end of governmental acts of lawlessness and crass impunity, deserve much better than what these governments, from the centre, to the states and local governments, have so far offered them.”
GOOD TALK.
