BREAKING: Godswill Akpabio Elected Senate President

The race for who becomes the Senate President for the 10th National Assembly (NASS) has finally ended as Godswill Akpabio defeated his closest challenger, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari.

The exercise commenced as nominations were received for Senator Abdul’aziz Yari and Senator Godswill Akpabio after which the Clerk of the Senate declared nominations closed in absence of further nominations.

Politics Nigeria reports that the contest was between Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State and Akpabio, a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and ex-governor of Akwa Ibom state.

Both are top-ranking chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Voting begun at exactly 08:45am on a state by state basis, alphabetically at the Red Chamber in Abuja, Nigeria. It ended at exactly 09:15am.

Recall that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu endorsed the former minister. This however  did not go down well with Yari who protested the endorsement and asked that the endorsement be reviewed.

The APC did not shift ground.

T avert any crises, some APC members had entreated Yari to drop his ambition to make it a smooth sail for Akpabio but the former governor vowed to fight to the finish.
