The National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Mr. Eze-Onyebuchi Chukwu, has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to reconsider his rumoured bid for the 2027 presidential election, urging him instead to support a younger, more visionary candidate.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, Chukwu said it was time for Nigeria’s political elders to begin handing over the reins of leadership to the next generation. He appealed to Atiku to channel his influence and political network into backing credible young aspirants, rather than seeking to return to the ballot for a sixth time.
“It’s time to return power to the youths,” Chukwu declared. “Rather than aspiring to run again in 2027, Atiku should rally his political allies to support a young, credible Nigerian.”
Chukwu, who once coordinated the Atikunation movement in the Federal Capital Territory during the 2019 elections, expressed disappointment that Atiku, despite widespread support from youth groups in past years, has not championed meaningful youth inclusion in leadership.
“I spent my own money and resources campaigning for Atiku because I believed he would champion youth empowerment,” he said. “But after contesting against Jonathan in 2015, Buhari in 2019, and Tinubu in 2023, he still wants to run in 2027. Is Atiku the only Nigerian fit to lead?”
The APGA youth leader emphasized that Nigerian youths must begin to reject political movements that exclude their voices and participation, insisting that the future of the country depends on bold, forward-thinking leadership from the younger generation.
He also suggested that if the 2027 race narrows down to another Atiku-Tinubu rematch, it may be more strategic for youths to support President Tinubu for a second term—provided he makes a firm, public commitment to hand over power in 2031 to a leader under the age of 50.
Chukwu pointed to the example of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who after multiple attempts finally won the presidency in 2015 but, in his view, left Nigeria worse off after eight years in office.
“Now Atiku appears determined to fulfil a personal ambition to become president at all costs. But at what price?” Chukwu asked.
He concluded by saying Nigerian youths are not against any particular leader but will unite behind anyone—Tinubu included—who is willing to make a sincere and actionable pledge to facilitate a generational shift in power by 2031.
