‘Don’t put hope in Buhari’s e-Naira’ – Reno Omokri

Reno Omokri, an ex-aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, says if any Nigerian ‘puts hope in a digital currency issued by President Muhammadu Buhari, such individual deserves to be poor!’

Omokri rubbished the newly-launched e-Naira on Wednesday via a Twitter post.

“e-Naira is not a cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrencies are supported by miners in a global blockchain. They are minted by private consortia, not governments. If you put any hope in a digital currency issued by Buhari, the banner of cryptocurrency, you deserve to be poor!” the government critic wrote on his verified handle.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Nigeria is one of only a few countries in the world to develop an official digital currency.

The eNaira was developed by fintech company Bitt, which is also behind the creation of CBDC in some East Caribbean countries.

At the launch Monday, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, said 500 million eNaira ($1.21 million) has already been minted.

The CBDC’s digital currency app and its merchant wallet are live and available for download.

The two apps, eNaira speed wallet and eNaira merchant wallet, are available on Google playstore and Apple store.
