The Association of Progressive Political Parties (APPPs), a consortium of political parties, has told the Osun state governor, Gboyega Oyetola, to shelf any re-election he may have.
They urged the governor to instead focus on fulfilling the campaign promises he made to the people in 2018. He was encouraged to implement policies that will boost socio-economic and infrastructural development.
The group also urged the people of the state to continue in their support of the government’s policies and programmes.
These messages were contained in a statement issued and signed by its chairman, Wole Adedoyin, who doubles as the Osun state chairman of Hope Democratic Party (HDP).
“Oyetola has not fulfilled what he promised the citizens during his electioneering campaign in 2018. We know that some of his current political moves are towards preparing for 2022 reelection bid. Some members of his cabinets are deceiving him; citizens of the state are not smiling mainly because many of them have not gotten dividends of democracy as promised by the governor in the year 2018,” the statement reads in part.
Governor Oyetola’s road to being governor was not all smooth. In July 2018, he contested for and won the All Progressive Congress’ gubernatorial ticket against the Osun state House of Representatives deputy speaker Yusuf Lasun; Speaker of the Osun state House of Assembly Nojeem Salaam; the Publisher of the Nigerian NewsDirect Newspapers, Dr Samuel Ibiyemi; Adelere Oriolowo, Moshood Adeoti amongst others.
On September 22, 2018, he contested the for and lost the Osun state gubernatorial election by a slim margin. The election was deemed inconclusive and a re-run, which he won, ordered.
However on March 23, 2019, the election tribunal declared the candidate for the PDP, Senator Adeleke, the winner of the election and orders INEC to issue him a certificate of return. Oyetola appealed the Tribunal’s judgement and won in both the appeal and supreme courts.
