The recently sacked Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Alhaji Abdulrasheed Bawa, has refused to cooperate with the Department of State Services (DSS) during his detention.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Bawa, currently held in custody at the DSS facility, has said the secret police have no legal grounds to detain him without pressing charges.
Both Bawa and Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, have been under arrest since their removal from their respective positions by the administration of President Bola Tinubu. These actions were taken in response to allegations of corruption and abuse of power levelled against them.
According to reports, Bawa has not cooperated with the DSS investigators since his detention began, expressing his protest against being held without formal charges.
Additionally, sources have revealed that he was accused of shielding former Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state and assisting him in suppressing his political opponents.
One insider disclosed, “The detained EFCC chairman has refused to write statements; he told DSS they have no right to detain him without charges.”
Another source noted, “So far since his detention, he has vehemently refused to cooperate with DSS investigators,” as reported by Sahara Reporters.
Meanwhile, reports have it that Godwin Emefiele, during his questioning by the DSS, implicated Bawa as an accomplice in the Naira redesign scandal that recently rocked the nation. This revelation follows Emefiele’s arrest and subsequent transfer from Lagos to Abuja to face interrogation regarding alleged corruption and abuse of power.
