The Department of State Services (DSS) has invited two brothers of the suspended chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, for questioning over alleged ill-gotten wealth.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the DSS operatives also grilled the chief of staff to the embattled, suspended EFCC chairman, Hadiza Gamawa, alongside his legal adviser, U.U. Buhari.
The suspects were reportedly detained on August 25 and released a few days later.
The DSS operatives also arrested Mr Bawa’s personal assistants, Rufa’i Zaki and Daniela Jimoh, on August 31.
Bawa was suspended indefinitely from office by President Bola Tinubu on June 14, following “weighty allegations” of abuse of office against him.
The government had said the suspension was to allow for a thorough investigation into his conduct while in office.
Since then, Bawa has remained in the detention of the secret police without prosecution.
This has led to calls from eminent Nigerians, including lawyers and civil society organisations, to press for his release or prosecution in a competent court of law.
As of press time, this newspaper understands that DSS has not commented on the investigation into Bawa’s brothers or his aides.
