The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, delivered a message of reassurance on Thursday, assuring Nigerians that their current hardships will soon come to an end.
The minister, speaking at the 50th-anniversary lecture of PUNCH Nigeria Limited in Lagos, provided insights into the government’s actions and plans for economic recovery.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the event, Idris acknowledged the challenges faced by the nation but expressed confidence that the narrative would be different within the next year. He encouraged citizens to exercise patience and focus on positive developments.
Idris emphasized that economic challenges were not unique to Nigeria, citing the recent recession in the United Kingdom.
He highlighted the government’s proactive steps, including the removal of fuel subsidy and efforts to provide clarity to the foreign exchange regime, taken since the administration’s inception.
The minister disclosed that a recent meeting with industry leaders and stakeholders aimed at discussing ways to improve Nigeria’s economy.
He assured Nigerians that the government believed these challenges were for the country’s good and promised a positive change in the narrative.
Addressing recent criticisms and concerns, Idris urged the media to report accurately and focus on the positive aspects of the government’s actions.
He revealed that a major policy shift in the petroleum sector would enhance operations and encouraged citizens to look forward to positive changes.
Idris said, “Nigeria is going through hard times, as we see, but this is not new and peculiar to this country. All the issues we are discussing now are issues that are also being discussed around the world.
“Only a few weeks ago, we heard that the United Kingdom had gone into recession. I am glad that it did not happen here.
“Otherwise, the story would be ‘Oh, Nigeria is in recession’ as if it is going to be the end of the world for the country.”
